Do you know

2.

There are 540,000 words in English language.
That is five times the number in Shakespeare’s time.

3.

In one week the information in The Times is equivalent to
the information of a whole lifetime in the eighteenth century.

3,000 books are published each day.

5.

Do you know

6.

Fibre optic cable capacity is tripling every 6 months.
10 trillion bits per second can be downloaded in one strand of optic cable.
That is the equivalent to 1,900 CDs every second.

7.

It is estimated that 1.5 Exabytes [1.5 x 1018] of unique new information
will be generated worldwide this year – that is more information
than in the previous 5,000 years.

8.

Do you know

9.

Technical information is doubling every 2 years.
Students on technical courses will find half of what they learn
will be outdated by the time they finish their course.

10.

Technical predictions beyond 15 years are too difficult.

11.

There are 2.7 billion Google searches each month.
How was information retrieved before Google?

12.

Do you know

13.

In the US, 1 in 4 people have worked for their company
less than one year. 1 in 2 have worked for their company
less than five years. [Data from the US Department of Labor]

14.

It is estimated that today’s students
will have had 10-14 jobs by the time they are 38

20.

Do you know which country this describes?

21.

  • Richest country in the world

  • Largest military resources

  • Centre of business and finance

  • Strongest education system

  • World centre for research and invention

  • The currency was the world standard of value

  • Highest standard of living

22.

Answer: Britain in 1900

23.

So, how does AS/A2 History fit with this?

24.

Learning and living;
living and learning

25.

A school is seen as that part of living that is focussed
on growing and learning in preparation for the adult years.

Schools have the task of preparing students

w   for jobs that do not yet exist
w   that will use technologies that have not been invented
w to solve problems that we don’t yet know are problems.

27.

Subject content and learning

28.

The school/college focus should change from
‘students and a particular specification’
to
‘students and their development of capacities as learners’.

Subject content is secondary to the student’s skills as a learner.

Learning skills are strongly connected to personal qualities and dispositions.

29.

Personal qualities and dispositions that foster the growth of the capacity
as a learner are developed in many ways both inside and outside the classroom.

30.

How much did the QCA people know when they produced,
for 2000 and thereafter, History specifications that were heavily technical
and study units that mostly had a time span of less than 60 years?

31.
