The University

There are around 30,000 students at De Montfort University’s four campuses in Bedford, Leicester, Lincoln and Milton Keynes making us one of the UK’s biggest universities. At Leicester, there are 20,000 students at the Leicester Campus. Here at De Montfort University, we can provide our students with a state-of –the-art learning environment. We have recently moved into the newly refurbished Clephan Building that houses the new Music Technology studio, and a Research Centre for Technology and the Arts. Throughout the building you will be able to find quiet study space, generous teaching accommodation and language labs.

In addition, we also have dedicated computing facilities, just for Humanities and Social Sciences students, in our computing node. Here you will find PCs and apple macs and for just £10 a year you can have access to this facility with free internet access, your own email account and free printing, as well as technical help.

Bedford is a smaller campus with around 3500 students in total. Nowhere is the level of investment greater than at the Bedford Campus. The new Information Centre, which comes on line in the new year, represents the culmination of our work to enhance library provision and develop the most up-to-date facilities. There will be access to journals, databases, and webpages from 100 fast PCs with CD-ROM, network, and word processing facilities. There is also an IT teaching space, a resources room and silent study areas. This represents the first stage in a process of modernisation that will incorporate new teaching blocks and student union facilities. By 2001, the Polhill Campus will be the home of new and dedicated facilities for Humanities and Social Science students.

Students of the Faculty, whether based in Bedford or Leicester, in addition to having their own resource areas, also have access to all the facilities and resources of a large and modern university. To find out more about our other university facilities, please see our university website.

De Montfort University runs History courses at both the Leicester and the Bedford campuses. The single honours History course at Leicester accepts about 30 students each year and another 30 students onto the joint and combined honours routes. The male:female ratio is approximately 40:60.

The Bedford course recruits around 20 full time students each year.

The details: History degree courses and options

The Course

History at DMU involves an intellectually demanding, wide-ranging and intensive study of the past. A diverse range of modules is offered, providing access to an ever-expanding stock of knowledge and understanding of the course of history. The history undergraduate at DMU will be involved in the collection, analysis, evaluation and presentation of a wide range of evidential material, in the form of both primary sources (the material which has come down from past societies) and secondary sources (the scholarly work of later historians).

In particular, the study of history at DMU is designed to communicate the essentially contested nature of history as a discipline. Students will be encouraged to debate and discuss the divergent interpretations of particular phenomena, processes and problems. In this way, the undergraduate historian at DMU will be encouraged to examine the ways in which the past and the present interact, and to think critically and independently about the arguments, information and evidence to which they are exposed.

History at DMU is divided into core modules and options. In the core modules you will acquire foundation knowledge necessary for higher study, as well as training in key historical skills.
