The details: History degree courses and options

The Single Honours History course offers a variety of historical perspectives on British (including Welsh) history since the sixteenth century, European history since the French Revolution, and the history of the United States from 1776 to the present. You will have the opportunity to specialise in one of these three main areas. You may also incorporate inter-disciplinary work from other Humanities subjects within your programme and take up to two modules per level in another subject.

What You Will Study

In year one, you will take two core modules which cover the areas of British, American and European history. You will then take four other modules in History, but may include some approved inter-disciplinary modules as History modules.

In year two, you will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of History modules including broader ‘survey’ modules and more specialised ‘in-depth’ modules. You will also take one ‘core’ ‘Approaches to History’ module. You may also take a module from another subject.

In year three, you will have the chance to produce a dissertation, equivalent to two modules, based on your own research into a topic of your choosing (in negotiation with a member of staff who will supervise your work). You can then have a free choice from a wide selection of modules. Some approved inter-disciplinary modules may again be included as History modules, and you may take one module from another subject.

History can also be studied as part of a major, minor or joint honours programme, on the BA Humanities or as part of a Combined Studies award. You can combine it with a wide range of subjects on offer at Glamorgan including Sociology, English, Psychology, Law, Welsh Studies, American Studies and Media Studies.
