The University

Goldsmiths is the UK's leading creative university. And this is why:

Location: a lively, urban area of South East London with excellent public transport connections to Central London.

Reputation: we're nationally and internationally known for academic excellence in the study of creative, cultural and social subjects. And we've been hitting the headlines with our success in research: the respected Times Higher called Goldsmiths a 'rising star' of research.

Tradition: we're part of the University of London, one of the world's great academic institutions, so you're guaranteed a consistently high standard of teaching and research.

Academic standards: Teaching is through a coherent mix of lectures, group seminars, and practical work. You'll be assigned a personal tutor to give you academic support, and the quality of our degrees is monitored by feedback from you, the students.

Accommodation: we have over 1,200 places in Goldsmiths accommodation within walking distance of the campus, and can also help you find private sector accommodation.

Student Support Services: our student support services are here to help you make the most of your time at the College, and our Careers Service will help you plan for your future.

Student life: our students come from South East London, from all over the UK, and from overseas. Around half come to Goldsmiths after a break from full-time education. Social and cultural life here includes degree shows; theatre performances and workshops; student video and film shows; and concerts and recitals. The Students' Union has a dynamic entertainments programme, and it's Athletics Union regularly produces winning teams.

Community ties: Goldsmiths was founded to provide educational opportunities for local people, and today our commitment to the community is as strong as ever. We continue to play a major role in the regeneration of the area, and each year thousands come to evening classes, part-time and foundation courses, and training and updating courses.

Environmental awareness: we are improving our environmental practice, and promoting awareness of environmental issues among our students and staff. We've set up recycling points, and smoking is no longer permitted in college buildings.

There are, currently, 506 History undergraduates

Programmes offered within the History Department

BA History

BA English and History

BA History and Sociology

BA History and Politics

BA (Hons) History

The BA History programme is very flexible. The only compulsory courses are those in the first year, and in the second and third years students are completely free to choose their preferred options. This means that two thirds of the entire degree (8 of the 12 course units in the degree) are chosen by them. Students can specialise in any periods of history or mix and match periods to suit their interests.

Furthermore, unlike more "conventional" history degrees we do not focus exclusively on political or economic history. Instead we adopt a broader approach to the study of the past, which emphasises ideas and concepts rather than facts and dates. Thus instead of focusing on chronology we explore the interaction of the major intellectual themes and currents (political, scientific, religious, philosophical, cultural and social) which shaped an age. Also, the degree has a wide geographical scope. We look beyond Britain and Europe to the wider world, to cover topics such as modern South Africa, slavery and civil rights in America, Caribbean history, Asian history, etc.

There is a wide range of courses. History is a large department with over 20 full-time staff and about half that number of part-time staff, so many options are available. The College is a member of the University of London with its unrivalled academic and social facilities. An important aspect of this is that in your third year you take a "special subject" from a list of forty or so topics taught either at Goldsmiths or in the History Departments of other University of London Colleges (e.g. King's College, University College, Queen Mary and Westerfield, Royal Holloway, etc.). This widens the range of specialist options open to you beyond anything available at any other University in the UK.

Length: 3 years full-time; 4-5 years part-time.

Applications: Through UCAS for full-time; direct to registry for part-time.

UCAS code: V101

BA (Hons) English and History

This degree consists of three distinct components: History, English, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

In your first year you will take four course-units: two in History and two in English.

In your second year you will take four course-units: one in History, one in English, one in Interdisciplinary Studies, and a fourth in either History or English.

In your third year you will take four course units: two in History (or: one in History and a Related Study), one in English and one (a long essay) in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Interdisciplinary Project

This consists of a dissertation or long essay of between 5000 and 7000 words. This is an independent study supervised by staff from one or both departments. The topic is chosen by the student but must approved by the course tutor. Past subjects have included Feminism, The Female Author and History in the Early Nineteenth Century, The Depiction and Influence of Opium in Victorian Literature, and Henry V: Play, Film Scripts and History. The submission deadline will be in the examining term. This degree enables you to maximise linkages between History and English. This is achieved formally in the interdisciplinary element of the degree (course options at Year Two and the project at Year Three) but opportunities to explore the relationship will be found in many of your 'single honours' courses offered in the two departments.
