Influences on college/university selection for
History degree applications (through UCAS)

HAVING DECIDED TO STUDY FOR A HISTORY DEGREE, to which colleges/universities should you make application?
There are eight general considerations to bear in mind.

1 Course options. Do the colleges you choose have the type of course you want, with your preferred options?

2 Region. Do you have a preference for a region in Britain? North, West, South and so on.

3 Distance from home. Is distance from your home important? (Don't forget travel costs, even with a student card.) How close to home do you prefer your college to be or is distance unimportant?

4 Campus/non-campus colleges. Do you have a strong preference for a campus college that has many facilities within the same area, or is that unimportant to you?

5 Big city or not big city. Do you wish your college to be in the middle of a big bustling city or do you prefer a smaller town or less urban location?

6 Particular facilities. Do you have special interests, particular sports, music, drama or whatever? Do the colleges of your preference have strong traditions in your special interests and the facilities that go with them?

7 Opportunities for work. Many students supplement their finances by some part-time employment. Are there good work opportunities near your selected college/university? The Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities, published annually, has helpful information.

8 Grade requirements. Don't forget that colleges have different entrance requirements. If you apply to a college that requires BBC for your course and, at best, you expect to gain DDE then that application will be wasted. You can be optimistic about your AS/A study progress but this should be tempered by realism.

ONCE YOU HAVE DECIDED your preferences you will have reduced the number of places to which you want to apply and, thereby, you will have cut down time-consuming searching through the UCAS Handbook.
