B.A. (HONS) ENGLISH AND HISTORY

UCAS CODE: QV32

Students develop a knowledge and understanding of a range of historical periods and topics and be introduced to a range of theoretical perspectives that inform the writing and study of history and English.

Level one explores some of the ways in which English and History can be combined to illuminate the character of the modern world.

The theme of level two is the way in which history is produced and literary texts are written in particular periods and how the interpretation of the historical past and theoretical texts changes over time.

In level three the theme is Representation and the Real, and how the issue is exemplified in literary and historical practice.

B.A. (HONS) HISTORY AND POLITICS

UCAS CODE: VL12

The course provides students with a training in the theoretical basis for the study of history and politics, concentrating on the modern period and focusing mainly on Europe, but also considering aspects of Europe’s relationship to the rest of the world.

Level one introduces students to the disciplines of history and politics through a series of modules, which explore the making of the modern world, the nature of political and historical controversy and a range of conceptual and theoretical issues that are central to the understanding of the two disciplines.

At level two students will be introduced to a range of political and historical themes drawn from the European experience and be encouraged to explore the ways in which theoretical disputes inform different accounts of the historical past and political controversy.

At level three two compulsory modules, Politics and the End of History and Globalisation explore the most recent contemporary debates in the disciplines.
