The University Studying at Manchester gives you the best of two worlds: a first-rate education from one of the UK’s oldest and largest civic universities and three years in the North's liveliest and most cosmopolitan city. One of the largest universities in Britain, the University of Manchester has around 3,000 academic staff and 18,000 students . Around 300 students take history or history related programmes with approximately half and half male/femaleHistory at Manchester The History department is one of the largest in the country, with around 35 academic staff working across the whole range of history, from medieval and economic history to the issues affecting societies in America, Europe, Asia and Africa in the recent past. The expertise of the department is reflected in the top-rate 5 recently awarded in the research assessment exercise. The department lies within the School of History and Classics. The Classics department has a further 13 staff members, with whom history students can take various courses involving ancient world studies and the histories of Greece and Rome. The programmes seek in year 1 to broaden out students' knowledge and understanding of history by exposure to a wide range of different types of history, periods and places. There are then ever increasing opportunities to specialise in areas of history (and related subjects) which most interest you.
