The University

The History degree enrolls about 60 students a year, with a ratio of approximately 50:50 male and female students. It is based in the Geoffrey Manton Building, at a city centre location in Manchester, which forms part of the largest higher education campus in the UK. Manchester, famous for its nightlife, international sporting venues, concerts and cultural events, is one of the country’s most entertaining student cities. As host of the 2002 Commonwealth games, the city has excellent sporting facilities to which our students have ready access.

A progressive degree scheme from a modern institution, our emphasis is on preparing students to compete in the market for graduate careers. History students graduate with experience not just in writing essays and sitting exams, but also in group project work, presentations and even producing history sites for the web.

With over twenty lecturing staff, we offer a wide range of courses both in terms of geography and chronology, from the Medieval period to the contemporary world, from Latin America to South East Asia. Our Twentieth century British and European history courses are particularly popular with students.

Teaching is conducted in the purpose-built Geoffrey Manton building, which boasts some of the most modern facilities for history teaching in the country. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds and have a track record of success with mature students and those who lack traditional entry qualifications. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and supportive department, providing a stimulating and rewarding environment for learning.

Entry requirements guidelines (2000): A Level grades CDD-BCC

The majority of our students have studied A/AS levels, but we welcome applications from potential students with Access qualifications, AGVNQ, BTEC, International and European Bacclaureate, Irish and Scottish Highers, or any comparable European qualifications. History V100

Year 1:

The first year is called a qualifying year. Its purpose is to prepare you for further study irrespective of your previous academic experience. The Year 1 courses (listed below) provide a good general introductory background across several historical periods and introduce unfamiliar types of history, methods of study and kinds of assessment.

  1. The Rise of Persecuting Society
  2. This unit looks at the issue of social control and the persecution of those who do not conform. It examines many forms of oppression, often based on religion, race, gender or politics, and seeks to understand the reasons for the mistreatment of those groups who are identified as so-called threats. A number of case studies are selected for detailed study, ranging in time and subject from the crusades, slavery and witchcraft to the Holocaust.

  6. Manchester: The Making of an Industrial region.

Year 2 & 3

The second and third year of the degree allow you to specialise in historical topics which particularly interest you, or that you wish to concentrate on to open up career opportunities. Currently forty seven History options are made available to students in years two and three, ranging from The Holocaust and The Allied Pursuit of War through A Social History of Leisure and Sport and Sexual Violence in British History to Medieval England and Apocalypse Now? Prophecy, Magic and Astrology 1400-1800. We offer courses across the broad sweep of History from medieval times to the late twentieth century, covering topics such as fascism, the world wars, sexuality and gender, information technology, the industrial revolution, and slavery. You can focus on political, social, cultural or economic history and study aspects of the histories of North and South America, India and South Asia, Britain and Europe, Russia and China, and Australia and Japan.
