School of Oriental and
African Studies,
University of London
The University The School of Oriental and African Studies is unique, as it is the only HE institution in the UK that specialises in the study of Africa and Asia. It has a full range of humanities and social science departments as well as ones specialising in language and culture. A unique feature of SOAS is the range of non-European languages taught here. Over forty non-European languages are available for study, all from beginner's level. SOAS has a long and distinguished history of widening the horizons of its students and helping them gain the skills needed for careers in an increasingly international environment. SOAS is based in a quiet area of central London known as Bloomsbury. We occupy a small 'campus' surrounded by other colleges and buildings of the University. The British Museum, Oxford Street, Covent Garden and the West End are all within easy walking distance SOAS has roughly 1,500 undergraduates with an approximate History intake of 50 students. History at SOAS History at SOAS offers a unique range of opportunities. Although many UK history departments have some courses relating to Asia and Africa, SOAS alone has an entire department devoted to their study. It was recently awarded the highest research rating, placing it among a very select group of the most highly ranked departments in the UK. Our courses enable history students to develop a detailed knowledge of the history of a particular area, for example Africa, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia and the modern Third World.
