The College

St Martin’s has some 8,000 students on its three main sties at Lancaster, Carlisle and Ambleside. History is taught at Lancaster and Carlisle.

Location. Both Lancaster and Carlisle are great places to study history. Both cities are steeped in history and excellent venues for history students. Lancaster has a long and distinguished history dating back to the Roman period. At its heart lies one of the best preserved medieval castles in Britain. The small city is consequently a popular tourist venue with a lively calendar of heritage events. Carlisle too has a strong identity and plenty of history on the doorstep including Hadrian’s Wall and a fine cathedral and castle. We make full use of the tremendous range of historical resources and sites in the north-west region.

Approximately 30 students major in History at Lancaster each year. Approximately 15 student major in History at Carlisle each year (Male/female ratio is equal).

St Martin’s history students have a choice of two campuses – Lancaster and Carlisle. Whichever you choose, you can be sure of a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, quality teaching and a great student life. You will also get a good qualification. All St Martin’s degrees are awarded by the University of Lancaster.

  • Several staff have written best-selling textbooks, particularly for the prestigious Access to History series, published by Hodder & Stoughton.
  • The History Department has come out of major inspections with flying colours. A recent Quality Assessment team reported that ‘students achieve good standards and acquire a good range of skills’. The report also praised ‘the caring and supportive environment’.
  • You will be taught by highly qualified staff whose constant concern is what makes good history teaching.

The details: degree courses and options

As a history student at St Martin’s you can choose from a menu of modules which cover practically every period of modern British, American and Irish history. In the first year you focus on skills, methodology and concepts. In the second and third years you select from a wide variety of modules. There are particular opportunities to focus on local and sporting history. In Year 3, you also select a special subject which involves examining a period or issue in real depth, thus helping to develop your research skills. This flexible scheme allows you considerable choice in planning the make up of your degree.
