The University

With over 22,000 students, the University of Wolverhampton is one of the largest universities in the country. The University has five campuses throughout the West Midlands and History, along with other subjects in the Humanities and Social Sciences, is currently taught at the Dudley campus.

The learning centre

Approximately 50 students each year take History, with equal numbers of both sexes and a high proportion of mature students. The University as a whole is committed to widening participation in higher education and as such has a higher proportion of students from the lower socio-economic groups than any other institution in the country.

History at Wolverhampton

The History subject group at Wolverhampton received a rating of 3A in the last Research Assessment Exercise and is committed to the delivery of high quality degree programmes which provide students with an opportunity to study many aspects of History, whilst at the same time acquiring a range of skills relevant to careers in many areas of employment.

The details: History degree courses and options

The History programmes at Wolverhampton are modular-based and may be studied on either a full-time or part-time basis, as a specialist subject or in combination with others. After taking a variety of first year modules which introduce the study and practice of history and areas of controversy and debate within the discipline, students may then choose to follow particular pathways in History, such as early modern and regional history, twentieth century Europe, women's history, North and South American history, and heritage and history.

Applied Historical Studies (new, for 2001 applicants)

In addition to the degree in History, we hope to have validated a new award in Applied Historical Studies, offered as a specialist subject only. This degree, by making practical skills central to teaching and learning, aims to provide a prescribed programme of study for students who may be considering a career in one of three professional areas: teaching, libraries/archives, and the heritage industry. It is not intended that successful completion of the course will necessarily provide automatic entry into such a career, but the different strands of the course should at least facilitate this by providing a sound basis for admission to a PGCE or Diploma/MA courses in information management or heritage.
